What is Solvent Extraction?
Solvent extraction is a widely used method for obtaining edible oils from raw materials, significantly outperforming traditional mechanical pressing techniques. By using a chemical solvent, typically Hexane, this process achieves oil yields of over 95%, compared to the 60-70% yield achievable through mechanical expeller pressing.
The solvent extraction process is particularly effective for large-scale industrial applications, as it removes nearly all residual oil, leaving only about ½% behind. 1. Seed Preparation
Seeds are pre-processed to improve oil extraction efficiency. For high-oil-content seeds, a pre-pressing stage is often employed.
2. Extraction with Solvent
Ground seeds or cakes are then washed with Hexane or other petroleum distillates, which extract the oil from the seed.
3. Desolventizing and Distillation
The extracted oil/solvent blend is heated to separate the solvent, which is then distilled off. The remaining oil is free of solvent.
4. Solvent Recovery
After extraction, the solvent is recovered and reused in the process, making the system highly cost-effective and eco-friendly.
