Animal Oil Refining: Enhancing Quality and Safety in Production

Date:Mar 20th, 2025
Animal oil, as the name suggests, is derived from the internal organs and subcutaneous fat tissues of animals. Common sources include suet and pure fat tissues from pigs, cattle, sheep, chickens, ducks, and fish. When combined with plant-based foods, animal oil enhances flavor and aids nutrient absorption. But does animal oil require refining? And why?

Modern Animal Oil Processing
In the past, animal oil was mainly extracted through traditional household rendering, especially for lard production. Today, mechanical extraction has largely replaced manual methods. Modern techniques use heat-conducting oil as a medium and employ fully sealed, low-temperature vacuum extraction. This allows for automated, continuous, and energy-efficient production, resulting in higher-quality oil.

However, while mechanical extraction removes most insoluble impurities, unrefined animal oil still contains small amounts of free fatty acids, pigments, and unwanted odors. To enhance oil quality, improve its stability for consumption and storage, and meet food safety standards, manufacturers often refine crude animal oil.

The Refining Process
Refining animal oil involves several key steps:

1. Degumming – Removes gums and other impurities, typically using chemical treatments or high-temperature steaming.
2. Deacidification – Neutralizes free fatty acids and sulfur compounds by adding alkaline solutions for a chemical reaction.
3. Decolorization – Eliminates unwanted pigments and impurities through activated carbon or other absorbents.

Ensuring Quality and Safety
Dingsheng Oil Equipment Manufacturer emphasizes that strict testing and quality control are essential to ensure refined animal oil meets national food safety standards. This includes testing for color, odor, taste, consistency, acid value, and peroxide value.

Conclusion
Refining animal oil improves its quality, safety, and nutritional value while reducing production costs for oil manufacturers. The refined oil is healthier and better suited to consumer needs, making the process an essential step in modern animal oil production.
